          As the war lingered and became more intense, maintaining morale was critical. The uniform became a soldier's personal flag and promoted an esprit de corps with brothers-in-arms.

          In 1861, North and South shared the mutual concern of a single standard for their uniforms.

          The nation,  both Union and Confederacy, competed with their several states to issue a standard uniform. The variety of color and style was staggering. The notion of northern blue and southern gray was to evolve over the war years.
